Gold finches vary in colour based on the stage of their life. A breeding male will be bright yellow with a black head and wings with a white markings. As a non breeding male will be a drab yellow head, unstreaked brown body with a blackish wings and two pole winbars.

Often perches on or explores along slender twigs and weedy stems. They next in hole in trees and nest boxes. Occurs in a wide variety of wooded and shrubby habitats. Small and compact with a tin short bill. Black cap and bib contrast with white cheeks, gray back and wings and light buffy underparts.

Jays are noisy birds, but often visits feeders sometimes in flocks. Blue above and white below, with a prominent crest and a bold neckline. The wings and tail are barred with black, and it has a bold wing bar.

Often found in flocks, particularly in winter in evergreen and deciduous forests. A large heavy-set finch, with a very thick conical bill. Adult males are yellow and black birds with a prominent white patch in the wings. Note bright-yellow stripe over the eye.

Found in evergreen (especially spruce) and mixed evergreen-deciduous forest. Large, round-headed song bird with a long tail and a short bill. Adults are grey overall, paler on the belly with a white cheek, throat and forehead.

They will be found in grasslands, open woods city parks, backyards, farms and forest edges. A small finch with a conical seed-eating bill. Like other finches, it has a notched tail. Adult males are a rosey red around the fave and upper breast, with a streaky brown back, belly and tail.

Sparrows are often found in cities, parks, zoos, suburban areas and around farm buildings. A chunky full-breasted bird with a round head and a stout bill. They have a buffy-brown with a grey brown underparts.

They most commonly perch on the telephone wires and forge for seeds on the ground. They have a very fast flight and have bullet proof aim. They prefer dense shrubs or evergreen trees in your yard to provide nesting sites. With a send coloured head and belly they are common to blend in with the trees.

Found in backyards, parks, woodlots and shrubby forest edges. Cardinals are long tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and a prominent crest. Males are bright red with a black mask and throat. While females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tails and crest.

Found in evergreen or mixed forests with open canopies, weedy fields, scrubby thickets or backyards and gardens. Small finch with a sharp, pointed bill and a short notched tail. Adults are brown and streaky overall with subtle yellow edgings on the wings and tail.

In winter, found in a wider variety of habitats, including shrub lands, oilfields, forest edges and backyards. Small somewhat stocky finch, like other finches it has a notched tail. Adult males have a raspberry red head, breast and back.

Found primarily in evergreen forests of spruce , fir, pine, hemlock, laren, and western red cedars. Compact bird with a very short tail, almost no neck and a sharp bill.Marked with a black crown, white eyebrow, and a black eye line. It's back is blue/grey and below a rusty orange.

In the winter found in open woodlands, scrubby fields, and backyard feeders. Uses its small bill to eat small seeds from trees such as willow, birch, alder and spruce, as well as from grasses and wildflowers. Adult males have a red crown and a pink washed chest, its back and sides are heavily streaked.

Found in brushy edges, but not always near water. Diet consists of mostly insects during the summer, and switches to mostly seeds and fruits in the winter. Medium-sized sparrow with a rounded head and long rounded tail. Coarse streaks on breast converge into a central spot. Russet stripes on crown and throughout eye.

Found most often in order deciduous woodlands, but also found in parks, wooded suburbs and yards. Compact with no neck and short tailed with a long sharply pointed bill. Blue/Grey back, stark white cheeks, and a black cap. Has a mostly white belly with rusty spots near it rear.

Breeds in patchy boreal forest, meadows, costal scrub and grassy areas with scattered trees. During Migration & Winter found along woodlots, hedgerows, thickets, weedy fields, backyards and city parks.

Found in woodlots, suburbs, parks and cemeteries, as well as forest edges, open pine-oak woodlands within burned forests and lands of infested bark beetles. Woodpeckers vary in our area the most typical are the Hairy, Downy, Red Headed, and Pileated.
